About the Thornell Laboratory

Our laboratory explores how epithelial tissues maintain physiological balance through coordinated ion transport, with a particular focus on chloride and acid-base regulation. Using a combination of electrophysiology, live-cell imaging, and molecular biology, the lab investigates how specialized epithelial cell types—such as pulmonary ionocytes—contribute to homeostasis and respond to disease. Recent work has illuminated the roles of CFTR-rich ionocytes in chloride absorption and the impact of inflammatory signals on epithelial function. The lab’s interdisciplinary approach is grounded in curiosity, collaboration, and a shared commitment to rigorous science. Trainees are encouraged to ask bold questions, develop technical expertise, and contribute to a supportive research environment where individual perspectives are respected and scientific growth is a collective goal.
